Following a news story reporting a wind turbine at Conisholme wind farm supposedly damaged by a UFO, Adrian Flux Insurance Services, a UK car insurance broker offered advice regarding car insurance cover in claims relating to car/UFO accidents.
The news is good if it is a straightforward case of the UFO crashing into the car – Adrian Flux car insurance say cover is assured. They do say that the company’s car insurance cover does not include ‘acts of war’ and that any damage caused by photon torpedoes or other space weaponry is not covered. Likewise, if an intergalactic war resulted in Armageddon and the car suffered damage, this would not be covered by the car insurance policy.
The car insurance broker goes on to say they would also pay out on a claim if the UFO crashed into a wind turbine and damage to the car was caused by a dislodged rotor blade from the turbine.
Gerry Bucke of Adrian Flux car insurance says “It gets more complicated if a UFO hits a wind turbine, causing a rotor blade to shear off which then crashes into the car.
"In that case, the car driver's best hope is that the UFO pilot's policy is completely up to date, as it would be simplest to make a claim on the alien's insurance. Otherwise there may be arguments as to who is responsible for the damage to the car.
"In the worst case scenario, the car would be covered by our policy - it's just that a claim on it would affect the driver's No Claims Bonus."
Assuming a driver has a comprehensive car insurance policy, the following possible disasters would also be covered by normal car insurance policies:
- Damage caused to the car by monkeys during a drive through a safari park.
- The car being hit by a block of frozen urine dropping from the sky.
- The car being hit by a meteor.
- Assuming the policyholder has European cover - driving into a grand piano abandoned on a hairpin bend in an Alpine pass.
- An escaped kangaroo jumping over the car and damaging the roof in the process
- A criminal mastermind using an orbiting satellite to hold a city council to ransom by taking command of traffic lights and causing gridlock during which the car is damaged.
Car Insurance always includes some exclusions and limitations which should be checked carefully. If in doubt you should check your car insurance policy wording carefully.
