All being well, when you organise a cheap van insurance quote, everything should go smoothly. You search the Internet and find a cheap van insurance quote which, after a little research, you decide to accept. The next step is to give the go-ahead and the wheels should whirr into motion. However, what happens if you suddenly find a quote which is far cheaper, or you have proceeded with a policy, only to find that you cannot get your proof of no claims bonus from your previous provider? This is precisely what happened to a young student recently.
Having agreed to purchase a policy from an insurer for a new vehicle, he then ran into problems with his previous insurer who refused to provide him with confirmation of his accumulated no claims allowance. He sensibly telephoned the new insurer and informed them of the situation and cancelled the policy. The new policy would have cost him £1,000, but he agreed to pay £100 as part of the cancellation agreement. This should have been the end of the matter. However he subsequently received a letter from a debt collection agency claiming that he owed the new insurer £1,800. A conversation with the debt collection agency made it clear that they would pursue him for the money and would instigate bankruptcy proceedings if necessary. This could have had disastrous repercussions at such a young age. Whilst it is highly unlikely that this student would have had the collateral to be worth making him bankrupt, the knock on effect could well have been that he would have been unable to obtain credit for many years: disastrous if he wanted to start his own business, or buy a home in the future.
Getting a cheap van insurance quote is of course essential in controlling costs, but the onus is clearly on the individual to double check that the required information is made available and, if there are any problems, to deal with it straight away - and in writing. In the case highlighted above, the debt claim should never have been initiated. However, once it is handed over to a debt collection agency, these businesses can be ruthless in the pursuit of a claim: after all, this is how they earn their money. The situation was clearly very stressful, but entirely avoidable.
The moral of the story is to put any cancellations and indeed any other form of agreements in writing and to send a copy to the parties with whom you have made the arrangement. With no idea as to when the original telephone conversation took place and little to back up his story, the student now has a fight on his hands to prevent things going further. It is thus well worth taking the trouble to follow up on any telephone conversations and verbal agreements with a letter. Remember, if possible, to get the names of anyone you speak to and where available, some kind of reference number or code, to make the dialogue and associated documentation more readily traceable. Getting a cheap van insurance quote be a cause for celebration, not litigation.
