One car park dubbed a "modern dungeon" by the locals due to its dingy, dark atmosphere is the Upper Parliament Street car park in Nottingham. The car park has been constructed with huge concrete pillars which are so difficult to miss that you are virtually guaranteed to scrape your car. The reality is that with more cars on the road and with many cities struggling to provide good quality parking, this is a problem which is likely to get worse. The problem is exacerbated by inconsiderate drivers who take up more space than they should do, by parking over the lines in parking bays, or by parking entirely outside of designated parking spaces. Our cities are becoming ever more congested which is why many of the larger retail outlets have moved out of town. However, good quality, reasonably priced parking is vital for the growth of city centres and designers and planners have their work cut out to provide the right type of parking, almost invariably in limited available space.

Although many people struggle with parking, with a bit of forethought, architects and designers could make the job slightly easier. At present, the only real answer if you find yourself in a car park that you struggle to get in or out of is to avoid it next time. On a further practical level it is advisable to park considerately, so that both you and the person parking next to you have less chance of damaging each others vehicles. If you have folding door mirrors, it is well worth pushing them in as these are one of the easiest parts to damage.
