BMW 1 Series Overview
The BMW 1 Series is now available in 3 distinct styles; the 5-year-old Hatchback design, the 2-year-old coupe or the 1-year-old convertible. The 1 Series is one of the most distinguished cars in its class and as such is also one of the most expensive, with the BMW badge adding a considerable amount of credibility to such a small car and ensuring that the driving experience is one of the 1 Series' best features. The 1 Series offers the unique quirk of rear-wheel drive, which no other small hatchback can match, as well as providing a completely even weight distribution between the front and rear, which combined with its looks, has unsurprisingly made it the second most popular BMW vehicle on sale today.
When the 1 Series was first released it was the smallest vehicle that BMW had ever produced, although much of the hardware used in the 1 Series has been appropriated from the compact BMW 3 Series range. Indeed the 1 Series is priced just below the latest 3 Series models from new and is more expensive than the extremely popular Mini, which is also produced and owned by BMW. At first, only a 5-door version of the 1 Series was produced, but a sportier-looking, if less practical, 3-door coupe was launched in 2007, followed by a convertible in early 2008. New technology was also fitted to the later versions of the 1 Series including the energy efficient engine system that ceases to burn fuel when the car is stationary amongst other technologies that comprise the "EfficientDynamics" that all new BMW models feature.
The current line up of 1 Series cars has engines ranging in size from the plucky 1.6 litre injection right up to a 3.5 litre, which is only available in the coupe or convertible models. This high performance version can hit 62mph in just 5.3 seconds and go on to reach a top speed of 160mph, which is impressive in a car of this size. The fastest 1 Series also has several unique features including the M Sport trim and various performance-enhancing technical upgrades that you will not see on the more pedestrian members of the range.
Cheap Car Insurance for BMW 1 Series
The main complaints levelled at the 1 Series have come from those who dislike its admittedly outlandish looks or take issue with the relatively high price at which the new cars are sold. However, it is possible to be a little frugal when choosing a 1 Series vehicle and looking for cheap car insurance, particularly if you pick the 1.6 litre diesel engine version as it is in insurance group 10. The cars with larger engines reside higher up the group listings, with the highest powered examples being in group 17. Whichever 1 Series you choose you can be assured that it will retain its value thanks to the strength of the BMW brand and it should also provide hours of driving pleasure whenever you get behind the wheel.
