The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has announced that newly qualified drivers are less likely to be involved in an accident if they are driving a small car which means they can start building a no claims bonus more quickly.
Newly qualified drivers would be wise to choose something with a small engine while they are getting used to driving on the road unaccompanied and if they want to find the cheapest young drivers insurance.
BIBA says it always encourages young motorists to go for less powerful models, especially as cars with smaller engines are usually eligible for cheaper car insurance.
BIBA’s head of technical services, Peter Staddon, said: “If you have a smaller car it could help to build up your no claims bonus and that is something we try and encourage young drivers to do.”
He went on to say that drivers who have recently passed their driving test should not worry about being unable to afford young drivers insurance as the car insurance industry is always coming up with new solutions to make sure cover is available to all motorists.
In the meantime, a study carried out recently by the Institute of Advanced Motorists has revealed that young male motorists who live in cities and towns are more likely to drive without car insurance. 60% of convictions for driving without insurance are for males under 25 and half of those are under 20.
Young drivers insurance increased by nearly four times the rate of inflation in 2008 according to The Co-operative Insurance.
The Co-operative Insurance director of general insurance, David Neave said that if this continues then a generation of motorists could become “uninsurable”.
