Vauxhall Astra Overview
The Vauxhall Astra was once the focus of derision, a tribute to mediocrity. Ford has brought out the Ford Focus which left the Vauxhall Astra looking like a club runner when compared to Usain Bolt. Vauxhall did not seem to know how to compete, and for a while trundled along with the Vauxhall Astra waiting for someone to find inspiration. Suddenly, Vauxhall found inspiration from somewhere to transform the Astra into what it has become today, one of the leaders in its class. Performance and looks were changed beyond expectation to produce a car which had the opposition on the back foot. The most recent upgrade of the car sees it with changes to its engines. The 1.6 Twinport engine has been redesigned to increase brake horse power from 104 to 114 bhp. Car emissions have also been reduced as a result.
The new Vauxhall Astra engines are quicker than their predecessors, and can reach 0-60mph in 10.9 seconds. Surprisingly, these changes have also produced greater fuel consumption. The new sports hatch models are even more impressive with increased speed and even further reductions in emissions. Executives at Vauxhall asked that the car was able to pass the shop window test, and be so appealing that potential buyers would be eager to try a test drive. Hence the lines have been tweaked and the overall look of the car improved. They also wanted the first impression of the car when driven for the very first time to hit the mark.
A new advanced car suspension system has been introduced, which includes a continuous damping programme, adapting the suspension of the car to suit the road surface, and also a Interactive Driving System which controls the stability of the car when cornering, meaning less work for the driver. Some of the higher specification models also have a 'sport' button, which alters to change the steering, accelerator and suspension settings.
