Introduced in 1996, the Ford Ka was a low cost addition to the Ford range. It is a small car, based on the Ford Fiesta chassis, but with a much more radical departure in shape. The Ford Ka, built in Valencia, produced quite a mixed reaction due to its new design. However, the Ka was universally applauded for its handling capabilities. Due to improved suspension, it was able to take corners comfortably at speed and had superb road holding, and was generally held to be one of the best handling cars of its type. The added advantage that it was a low cost car with low motor insurance premiums made it a highly profitable car for Ford. A new engine was designed to replace the old 1960s based design, and the car has since become the biggest selling car in its class. The Ford Ka was supplied with colour coded bumpers, which was against the designer's original concept of having low cost bumpers in case of damage during town driving. There are a number of different models which have differing levels of extras and refinements. In 2003, the Ford Ka received a partner in the shape of the SportKa, marketed as the Ford Ka's "evil twin". This had a slightly more sporty appearance and also came as a convertible model. The SportKa ceased to be produced in 2006.
Ford Ka - Good Reputation
Generally, The Ford Ka has a good reputation for reliability, although there have been some issues with rusting spark plugs affecting the cylinder head. Despite several minor problems, the car has continued to sell strongly, and was updated in 2008.
The car was redesigned into a more streamlined version. It has an improved safety rating, and has even made an appearance in the latest James Bond film, 'Quantum of Solace'. The new generation of Ford Ka may be introduced into America, which would make it Ford's smallest car in the American market.
