Ford Fiesta Overview
The Ford Fiesta is one of Ford's most popular and enduring models, having been sold around the world since the mid 1970s, across six generations of design, totalling more than ten million models built. The car was built to compete with the increasing popularity of 'super mini' level cars being built by European manufacturers - although the British Leyland Austin Mini, Morris Mini and other vehicles such as the Fiat 500 had already been popular for some time. The Fiesta was designed as a front wheel drive, fun, efficient city car to appeal to younger drivers, and those with 'light' driving needs who are looking for low fuel costs and cheap car insurance. The Fiesta had already sold a million units within three years of the car's launch, making it one of Ford's biggest successes.
The Ford Fiesta was designed to be smaller than Ford's existing smallest car, the Escort, although since the Fiesta's introduction, the supermini market has grown so much that Ford could justify building an even smaller and cheaper model, the Ford Ka, in the 1990s, meaning Fiestas from this point on would benefit from higher trim levels and extras options than were available previously. The company had already built a brand around the vehicle focused on the 'hot hatch' appeal, and the XR, RS and ST models have been some of those most popular with the younger market. The newest model of the Fiesta, the Mark 6, was unveiled in 2007 and has been available in the UK since 2008. It features a radically new design from the previous model, with higher safety design, and new features such as a standard USB port for MP3 players and improved entertainment interface.
Cheap Car Insurance for Ford Fiesta
Because of the huge range of models of Ford Fiesta that have been available over the years, the car may come under several different insurance groups. Some models are in groups 1 and 2, whilst there are also some in group 8 - dependent upon the specification - although most come under groups 4 to 6. Choosing a more basic model, with fewer extras and a smaller engine particularly, will generally mean cheap car insurance can be found more easily. A few quotes were checked, based upon a typical driver as a female office worker aged 25, married, home owner, living in Manchester, 9000 miles annual usage, social and travel to work usage, car kept in garage overnight, driving for five years, three years worth of no claims bonus, 3rd party fire & theft level. Based on a 2006 Zetec Climate 1.2 litre model, three door, manual, petrol.
Norwich Union quoted £754 for third party fire and theft, and £852 for fully comprehensive. The AA quoted £506 for third party fire and theft cover (£150 excess rate), and £679 fully comprehensive (£100 excess). Asda Insurance quoted £493 third party fire and theft, but only £612 fully comprehensive - meaning you may be able to get a better level of cover for the same price if you try a couple of different companies.
