Audi A3 Overview
Audi have continually marketed their cars firmly based on build quality. Looks were a touch on the conservative, although Audi's reliability won it a host of admirers. However, when the stunning looking R8 arrived, it announced Audi's intention to put as much effort into the way their cars looked as much as they did with the engineering side. The problem that Audi faced in the past was that although quality could almost be guaranteed in a car costing over £50,000, their lowest price volume models were often not perceived in the same way. Luckily, perceptions can change, and with the A3 range Audi have gone all out to try and make the changes needed to improve that perception. Reviews so far have been favourable, with some suggesting that the Audi A3 range is amongst the best that money can buy.
Audi have attempted to change perception by altering the driving experience rather than editing the way the car drives. Some of the features introduced in top of the range models have made their way down the chain, including Audi's magnetic ride system. Drivers can choose between a more comfortable driving mode, and a sportier feel; all at the touch of a button. The gearbox is an S-tronic twin sequential gearbox, which, depending on the model, can either be supplied as a six or seven speed system, allowing gear changes to be made at racing car speed. Only slight changes have been made to the exterior of the car top give it a sharper look, with LED running lines based on the R8. The interior of the car has seen some noticeable upgrades with aluminium switches, improved upholstery and the instrument cluster is definitely better quality.
The Audi A3 retains its usual complexity, and, in addition to the four petrol and three diesel engines, choices need to be made whether to go for the Sportback or Convertible body style. You can also choose between the S-tronic transmission, or stick to a manual gearbox. Everything is on the menu with Audi; you just need to choose what configuration you would like. Although people are often put off by the asking price for an Audi A3; savings can be made on running costs with the A3, and they compare very favourably with its competitors. Fuel efficient engines have been included to the range and some models, such as the 1.9 litre TDi will manage 52 miles to the gallon.
