Vauxhall Vectra Overview

The Vauxhall Vectra still suffers from its image as a sales reps car, despite the fact that its qualities are well documented in many of the car review columns. Unfortunately, the stereotype has been difficult to shake off, and has resulted in Vauxhall being unable to sell the car into the private market as much as they would have liked. As usual, Vauxhall provide a huge range of options when it comes to body and engine specifications. As well as saloons, there are 5-door hatchbacks and estates, and range from the 'Exclusiv' level of trim through to the Elite and VXR ranges. However, even the 'Exclusiv' option includes adjustable driving seat, six airbags and air conditioning. Slightly further up the range is the Design range, which includes; climate control, rain sensitive wipers, and automatic headlamps. Estate drivers can expect electronically opened tailgates.

The Vectra engine range starts with a 140bhp 1.8 litre petrol engine, and goes through to the 276bhp VXR, which can get you from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. Vauxhall have managed to reduce CO2 emissions on the range, whilst managing to slightly improve economy. However, the main focus for engineers was to try and make the Vectra more appealing to the private market. They already had the secret to providing quiet cabin noise and smooth ride, but now they have improved steering and better chassis control. The car has a more sporty edge to it, and generally a more distinctive styling. Pricing remains competitive despite the generosity of the equipment However, the main test will be whether Vauxhall can break their stereotype and allow the buying public to see the vehicle for what it is, rather than what they perceive it to be.
